The stone steps that connect the Polo Grounds Towers and E. 155th Street are worn down, steep, slick when it rains, and often covered in trash and leaves. There is lighting — but it’s dim and uneven, leaving large sections of the staircase in shadow. At night, you’re basically walking by feel. People still use these stairs because the alternative is a four-block detour that many residents don’t have the time for — or simply can’t manage. For a lot of folks, this isn’t a shortcut. It’s the only realistic route home. Right now, these stairs aren’t just neglected. They’re unsafe. The people who rely on them every day deserve better than choosing between danger and getting home quicker.
